The Little Things in Life – Managing Micro Apartments

micro-apartmentsIf you are an individual looking for an apartment in Colombo for yourself, you are sure to find many options available for rent or even for sale. Majority of these apartments can look compact and “too small”, however there are many different ways to work around it to make your living space appealing. Never think that space is an issue, micro apartments can be designed to suit your taste. With its own style to it, the apartment can be structured in the most diplomatic way – it’s another way of managing your space. Apartments or annexes such as these, comes with lofts and other fancier compartments to ensure complete comfort.

A designer will always look to the ceiling before deciding on what to do with the place. A smaller place will always have a decent elevation to either build a deck or decorate with skylights; all this to make the apartment look bigger. Playing around with colours help too, and you do not necessarily have to use white. Brown glossy paint with the right coloured furnishing can make a world of a difference!

When managing your space – first thing is first; create different areas for each activity, draw a floor plan if you must. A place to sleep, a place to cook, a place to work or chill. Use subtle demarcations where you can create separations through curtains and other partitions, by doing this your apartment is sure to look bigger. A tip you must take in to consideration is, imagine exactly what you would like to see first when you walk in to your new home and everything will just fall in to place.

Do not be in a hurry to furnish your apartment, collect one item at a time; keeping in mind to make maximum use out of it, make sure it has a multipurpose – a desk can also be a dining table. Invest on daybeds, deep sofas, murphy beds, folding chairs, collapsible tables…etc. it is although advisable to break-it-down; have two small round tables put together instead of a large coffee table to make use of both individually. A contradicting tip would be to have larger but fewer furniture, the grander looking ones for your space to appear larger.

Trick your eye in to believing that your apartment is big – strategically place mirrors to brighten up the place more or put up curtains with vertical lines from ceiling-to-floor.

When having a micro apartment for yourself, it’s important to keep it clean and to get rid of clutter and to always look for built-ins and modular furniture systems that can be easily accommodated in your compact area; wall-to-wall or floor-to-ceiling.

Always remember that there aren’t any rules; only your living space. Therefore,  play with combining what you love and what you need to have a beautiful home for yourself.
