The British School in Colombo should be the school of first choice for the discerning parent in the international school arena in Sri Lanka, offering students a broad and balanced education in an environment which compares favourably with the best international standards, and which prepares them to face the challenges of the global world confidently and effectively.
Founded in 1994, the British School in Colombo is an independent, co- educational school for academically willing children aged between 2 and 18. There are currently around 1200 students on the school roll (700 in the Junior School and some 500 in the Senior School, with a Sixth Form of 85). The school has the capacity to grow to 1300 over the coming years. The new school site, opened in 2005, houses both Junior and Senior Schools, with shared sports facilities, canteen and auditorium; all other facilities are for the exclusive use of each school. Hence both schools have their own range of classrooms, science laboratories, computer rooms and libraries designed specifically for use in the relevant age groups in that section of the school. This allows us to give each student the facilities best suited to their own personal needs in an environment where progression through the school is clearly defined and understood by students and their parents. Such concern for clear avenues of development determines the strategic planning of the school in every field, not just academic. The school is committed to educating the whole child and offers a broad range of extra-curricular activities. This means that we aim to ensure that every student has the opportunity to find, excel in and be rewarded for those things they do best or enjoy the most. You can find the school on Google Earth with the co-ordinates 6˚54’21.00” N, 79˚52’38.12” E.
The Principal is responsible for the running of the whole school, assisted by two Deputy Principals with responsibility for the Senior School and the Junior School. Each school has a separate team of staff. Throughout both schools there are staff designated to be in charge of each year group and each subject area, and who act as a link between the two schools to ensure continuity of academic and personal development. All of these are dedicated and well-qualified teachers with a wide range of experience gained in the UK and elsewhere.
