Journey: Colombo to Hambanthota

Hambantota is in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. If traveling from Galle, Hambantota is 122 kilometers to the south, and 45 kilometers from the Rajapakse Airport in Mattala. Hambantota is in close proximity to both Bandula National Park and the Yala National Park. In ancient times, Hambantota was referred to as Ruhuna. It had a flourishing civilization and the region was blessed with stunning irrigation network and fertile fields.

Travel Options from Colombo to Hambantota

Bus

When traveling from Colombo to Hambantota by bus, the journey takes approximately 6 hours and 10 minutes and will cost tourists between Rupees 270 and 660.

Train

Traveling by train is very similar to that of journeying by bus. The travel duration and cost of train tickets are also similar. The train and bus continue to be the most affordable and cheapest way of traveling to Hambantota from Colombo and other main cities and towns in Sri Lanka.

Taxi

Taxi is a comfortable mode of travel but a more expensive form and is suited to tourists that prefer to travel with a touch of comfort and luxury. There are a number of taxi services available in Sri Lanka and each service differs in rate one from another. On average, when traveling from Colombo to Hambantota the duration of travel 3 hours and 17 minutes and cost would be between Rupees 19,000 and 22,000.

Self Driven Vehicle

If you are driving a vehicle up to Hambantota it would still be a comfortable ride, however, less expensive than traveling by taxi. The cost to drive your own vehicle would be between Rupees 3,400 and 4,900. There are 2 routes of travel to Hambantota, one is the longer route by Galle Road which offers tourists a glimpse of the coast along to Hambantota, but can take up to 7 hours. The other is the shorter route through Ratnapura/Avissawella which can take up to 5 hours.

Air Travel

An office of Sri Lankan Airlines has been opened in Hambantota which operates on weekdays from 8.15AM to 5.00 PM and 8.15AM to 12.30 PM on Saturday
