Getting Driving Permits in Sri Lanka

The process of obtaining a driving permit for tourists in Sri Lanka is pretty straightforward. It doesn’t take more than a couple of hours to obtain a driving permit once you are in the correct place. Tourists have to visit the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera located close to Horana Road. The address is listed below.

The permit allows you to drive the following.

A – Motorcycle engine capacity 100cc
A1 – Motorcycle engine capacity 100cc
B – All cars dual purposes, passengers 8, GVW – 3500kg, trailer 250
G1 – Two wheel tractor with a trailer

However, according to new laws tourists will not be allowed to drive a tuk tuk unless you have a 6 months visa. In this instance you can obtain a license to drive a tuk tuk during your stay in the country.

Documentation Required for Obtaining a License

In order to obtain a driving permit in Sri Lanka for tourists, you must take the following documents which include,

  • Passport
  • Photocopies of passport page, current driving permit and photocopies of visa page
  • Original driving license from country of origin
  • Rupees 1000 to obtain the license

Does anyone know the opening hours of this service at the airport? We're coming in late on a Sunday, guess they are not open 24h?
