Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara ordered Cinnamon Garden Police today (11) to file indictments against NFF Leader, MP Wimal Weerawansa, and 6 others on 10th of March 2018.They will be indicted for launching a demonstration in front of the UN Office in Colombo, causing public inconvenience.
The demonstration was held against the visit of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on 6th of February 2016.
The protestors are accused of allegedly blocking Bauddhaloka Mawatha and Havelock Road during the demonstration.
When the case was taken up this morning, the lawyer appearing on behalf of MP Weerawansa told the Magistrate that his client is attending the Parliamentary session today.
Having considered the submissions, the Magistrate ordered the surety of MP Weerawansa to produce an attestation signed by the Secretary-General of Parliament to prove that MP Weerawansa was in Parliament.
He was asked to submit it on the next hearing day.
At the same time, notice was issued 7th accused of this case as he also failed to appear in court today.
The other suspects are NFF MPs, Jayantha Samaraweera, Weera-kumara Dissanayake, former MP Piyasiri Wijenayake, Mohamed Musammil, Provincial Councilor Roger Senevirathna and party member Chaminda Jayalal.
