When researching where to go for my recent trip, my only criteria were: somewhere with adventure and somewhere intrepid.
I’m a beach lover with a penchant for culture, wildlife and good food. Sri Lanka delivered on that and so much more.
The curry, dahl and spiced rice are endless in Sri Lanka, especially in Unawatuna, a small village in the south. Here, we went to the Sri Lankan Cookery Class cooking demonstration. It was in a traditional hut, ultra-unique and delicious!
We took a scenic train from Unawatuna to Nuwara Eliya, past the tea plantations and through the jungle.
We visited the tea plantations and then enjoyed high tea at the Grand Hotel. Being high up in the mountains, Nuwara Eliya is a few degrees cooler so made for great market shopping weather once high tea had finished.
Sri Lanka’s ‘cultural triangle’ is home to seven UNESCO declared world heritage sites. My favourite was Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock), a 200-metre high citadel nestled amidst the jungle. We climbed the spiral stair case to the top, where we saw what were once the palace grounds of King Kasyapa (477-495 CE).
